The Greater Good: How to Reach the Third Ending

Short answer: The Greater Good is the third ending - the saving-lives branch of the Boat Deck finale. It is also the easiest to miss: instead of helping Eliza, you pan to the jammed collapsible lifeboat and cut its davit ropes.

How to reach it

  1. Play through to Level 7 (THE SINKING) and reach the Boat Deck finale.
  2. When the camera focuses on Rothvil and Eliza, pan left: a collapsible lifeboat is jammed on its davits.
  3. Cut the davit ropes (the axe); the boat drops and the sequence cuts straight to the ending - about 50 passengers are saved and THE GREATER GOOD fires.

Which value is this ending?

The official store text lists the finale's values as justice, love and saving as many lives as possible. Public playthroughs and ending guides put The Greater Good in the saving-lives slot: you free the last lifeboat and trade everything else - Rothvil escapes - for around fifty strangers. The achievement itself only says "third ending", so the label is the community reading of the official framework.

The endings as a set

All three endings are rare on public achievement trackers because they sit behind a full playthrough plus a finale replay. If you are collecting all three, the fastest approach is to save the final choice for last and replay only the ending sequence for the other branches.

Replaying for another ending

See The Executioner and The Thieves in the Night, or the endings hub for the choice framework and the official achievement texts.

FAQ

FAQ

Common questions about this topic.

How do I unlock The Greater Good?

Reach the third ending: play to Level 7 and finish the game on that branch. The achievement description is "Reach the third ending".

Is this the 'save everyone' ending?

It is the saving-lives branch: you free the last collapsible boat and around 50 passengers survive. The official value is "saving as many lives as possible" - not everyone, and public playthroughs put this ending in that slot.

Are any of the endings missable?

All three are exclusive, so you cannot hold them in one run. The Greater Good is the easiest to miss at first - it needs the pan-left look at the jammed lifeboat; reload your save before the final choice to retry.

Which ending should I do first?

There is no official order or recommended ending. Many players land on The Thieves in the Night first; the other two need deliberate final-moment choices.
